Beginners Guide to DIY Nail Art

If you love having your nails done, then you might also love having designs and nail art too. Nail art is a great way to add unique touches to your nails, while also helping them to stand out. Nail art can include anything from basic shapes and color blocking to intricate images and designs. The great thing is, it’s not hard to start doing basic beginner’s art. There are so many ideas to choose from for any skill level.

You will need some tools and supplies before you dive into the world of DIY nail art. Since you are doing this on your own, you will need to make sure you have the proper supplies. Make sure you have plenty of nail polish colors to choose from. You will also need a set of brushes with varying brush sizes for different designs. You need a clear polish/topcoat and a base coat. Lastly, you will need a nail file, buffer, and nail clippers.

You don’t need a super extensive collection of supplies, but you want to have enough to help you try different designs. And sometimes it’s just fun to play around with no set design in mind to see what you come up with! There are a ton of tutorials and books on the specific steps for creating nail art that would be great to check out after reading this article. For now, let’s dive into Clutch Nails’ guide to DIY nail art!

What Are Some Simple Nail Designs?

We know that even simple designs can be hard for those who are new to nail art. On our list of ideas, we tried to choose designs that make a great starting point. You can always add on to these designs or make them your own. These designs are also cool enough that they don’t look like they are “beginner” level. Check out these ideas and let us know which one you are going to try first!

Daring Diagonal

This is the perfect nail art design to get you started. This fun diagonal design is edgy, cute, bold, and minimalistic all at the same time. You can play around with the size of the two diagonals, and you could even change the sizing on each finger for a unique look. The best part is, you can totally freehand this design, even as a beginner. And, you only need two colors to do it.

You can pick any two colors you like. Choose your favorites or choose a bold duo that stands out. Start by painting a larger portion of your nail one color, but on a diagonal. Make sure there is a sharp line separating it from the rest of your nail. Then, take the second color, and fill in the other portion of your nail.

The Reverse French Manicure

This is a unique take on the traditional French manicure. If a French is too basic (or too hard) for you, then this might be just what you need to try. Basically, you will be doing a French manicure, but on the opposite side of your nails. This art design lines your cuticle, which acts as a handy outline. You can also choose a fun color instead of white. Or, opt for some bold and chunky sparkles.

All you will need is a clear coat and whatever color you want the line to be. We think a gorgeous gold would look awesome for this design. Start by applying a clear polish to all your nails. Then, take your gold and trace your cuticle on the nail side. Apply as many coats as you want to achieve the look you are going for.

Lots of Lines

This is a great design for your inner abstract artist. There’s really no rhyme or reason to this design, and that’s part of the appeal. There are also two different ways you can do it. You can start by painting your nails a base color and adding the lines, or you can add lines to your bare nails. Either way, it’s bound to look really cool and stand out in the crowd.

Basically, you can decide how many lines you want to have on your nails. You can just have one line on each nail, or you can have varying amounts on each nail. If you start with a base color, the design will look “fuller” on the nail. If you apply it to your plain nails, it will look more abstract with open space. The color of the lines is totally up to you!

Simple Snakeskin

This is a cool design that should resemble snakeskin when you are finished. This is the perfect look for an edgy outfit or a night out. It’s classy but sassy at the same time! You will need an extra bit of supplies for this look. You can use a piece of fishnet tights, a piece of a loofah, or any other net-type material. You will also need two different nail polish colors. One of the colors should be light, and the other should be dark.

Start by painting your nails with one of the colors. Let that layer of polish dry before moving on to the next step. Take your fishnet or whatever material you choose and lay it over your nails. Use your other color to paint over the netting. Carefully peel off the netting, and you should have a super cool snakeskin design!

Is There an Easier Way to Get Nail Art?

Even though nail art is such a fun way to express yourself and make your nails look amazing, some of us simply do not have the skillset to do nail art. Even designs that are for beginners can be challenging for those who don’t have a steady hand.
